Laundry Room Design Tips

Hot take: a laundry “room” should not be a cramped closet in the basement, especially if you’re doing wash for more than two people. If you have the space, you should definitely consider building a true laundry room complete with cabinets, a sink, and counterspace. Here are some great laundry room design tips, design elements, and their benefits to help you conceptualize what your laundry room could look like.

Eliminate Mess

Say goodbye to laundry baskets, hangers, and piles (and piles) of clothes being strewn all over the floor or shoved wherever they’ll fit. Installing upper and lower cabinets will give you more than enough space to store all of it. You can even get clever pull out drawers that house laundry hampers and an ironing board for easy access and easy storage. There’s so many cabinet styles to choose from, you’ll be able to find something that fits your needs and taste.

Ample Work Space

Stop lugging baskets of laundry to the sofa or bed to use as a folding area. Another plus of installing cabinets is that you get the counter space that accompanies them. You’ll have ample room to fold your laundry, and you’ll save your back the discomfort of awkwardly leaning over a too-low work area. If you feel like treating yourself, consider going with a granite top.

A More Enjoyable Environment

So we’ve (hopefully) moved you out of the basement and eliminated mess, which already creates a more pleasurable environment. But why stop there? Consider installing a window seat for when you want to take a break and scroll Pinterest. Or, if the room doesn’t have a window to begin with, consider installing one to let in natural light. Think of whatever small touch will make the laundry process more enjoyable for you.
