I’ll freely admit that a fair amount of my screen time is consumed by drooling over the latest kitchen trends on social media. I love inspiration from ideas and different styles. But recently, when I scroll through #kitchendesign and similar tags, I’m met with a wall of white.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of all-white kitchen designs. The clean and classic look is on trend for a reason. But what if that’s not really your style? The white trend has become so dominant, you might be having a hard time finding inspiration for a different look. Allow me to remedy that issue.

If you’re looking for some depth in your kitchen design, consider using mixed tones. Designing with mixed tones requires a little more effort, but the results are stunning and well worth it. Here are a few tips to help you begin.

- Decide how many colors you’ll use. Personally, I think three is a good number. The more you add, the more difficult it is to make them all work together.
- Perhaps a bit obvious but choose your colors. Remember, materials like wood and metal can count as a color too if you choose to feature them in the design.
- Use renderings to visualize the space and try different color combinations. Designing with mixed tones is all about balance, so see what color combinations achieve that balance in your space.
