Scandinavia Comes to the Lehigh Valley with A Hygge Kitchen Design
A kitchen renovation in Allentown by Christine Shorr, AKBD of Morris Black Designs brought Scandinavia to the Lehigh Valley. The completed kitchen design is the perfect combination of elegant and cozy, or hygge as the Danish and Norwegians call it!
Hygge, pronounced “hoo-gah” is a Danish expression of the Scandinavian attitude towards life: finding joy in everyday moments, celebrating coziness, warmth, and family, as well as practicing mindfulness.
The kitchen is more than a place to cook; It’s a place to enjoy working with our hands, to take in the smells that are simmering, the cookies that are baking or the warmth of the coffee brewing. This kitchen was designed with details that are ideal for a family and extend an invitation to the holiday season and the cold, winter months ahead.
Rich, dark grey KraftMaid cabinets finished in Translucent Phantom are complemented by a warm, brick backsplash. Quartz counters align the u-shaped kitchen and create the perfect place to prep and serve holiday meals. The natural look and feel of the wooden floors contribute to the hyggelig home.
A sleek stainless-steel apron-front sink fits seamlessly, and is built to accommodate lots of dishes, tall pots, large pans (and even a place to wash a baby or a small pet!)
The inclusion of stainless-steel appliances would make any chef happy – especially this time of year when lots of cooking and baking is done.
The Samsung Family Hub™ refrigerator has a touch screen that allows the family to see what’s inside the fridge, create and share shopping lists, plan meals, find deals and coupons for stores in their area, and more. They can even play their favorite Spotify playlist, or enjoy the classic holiday songs like, “Walking in a Winter Wonderland,” by Michael Bublé.
Adjacent to the kitchen is the dining area, including additional matching wall cabinets with glass front doors – great for displaying decorative items, especially holiday-themed or family heirloom pieces.
In this dining area is a Miele built-in coffee machine. Incorporating a small, dedicated space to enjoy a warm beverage creates a setting to engage family and friends.
The elements of this hygge kitchen define the essence of the room and how it feels to be in it. It reveals an atmosphere where family and friends can cook, laugh, and relax, the Scandinavian way.
